The Cheapest Module Can Cause the Most Expensive Service Visit

Photovoltaic modules have become remarkably affordable. That changes the way they are sold.


When quotations are compared, attention usually goes to watts, efficiency and price. A small difference per module can decide the order, while the module itself is increasingly treated as interchangeable. If one fails, replacing it can appear simple: remove it and install another.


But a module is cheap only while it is on the pallet. Once it is installed on a roof, the economics change.


A Replacement Module Is Not the Cost of Replacement

A product guarantee and a service visit are not the same thing. Even when the product itself is covered, the intervention does not disappear.


Someone still has to identify the problem, speak with the customer, plan the return visit, travel to the site, arrange safe access, disconnect the system, remove the module, install the replacement, test the system and document the claim.


The module may be one of the least expensive components involved. The return visit can be one of the most expensive consequences.


Good Installers Earn From New Projects

The cost of a return visit is not limited to labour and travel. It also consumes the installation team’s limited capacity. A day spent reopening a completed project is a day that cannot be spent completing a new one.


It can also turn a satisfied customer into a difficult conversation. The installer must explain why a system sold as a long-term investment already requires intervention.


Good installers earn from new projects, not from returning to old roofs.


That is why module quality should not be judged only by power and efficiency. Those figures describe the module at the beginning. The installer’s commercial risk depends on how consistently it performs after handover.


One Question Before You Compare Price

Before choosing between two modules, ask: What happens to our margin if we have to return to this site?

  • What operating record supports the product’s reliability?

  • Can the manufacturer trace the module and its production data?

  • How quickly can the manufacturer respond when a problem occurs?

  • Which costs remain with the installer even when the product is covered?


These questions do not replace the technical comparison. They complete it.
